Environmental, Health and Safety Aspects of Nanotechnology

Summary:
The growing hype of nanotechnology has lead to an unprecedented research and development effort in both the public and private sectors. Very little is known, however, about the interaction of man-made nanostructured materials and living organisms, as studies of nanotoxicology are gaining increasing interest, but are still in their infancy.

An ISO committee on nanotechnology has just started looking into creating an appropriate nomenclature and a potential standardization of nanometer-sized materials, but a proper legislation of the environmental, health and safety aspects of nanotechnology will take years to be implemented.

This audio/Web seminar will demonstrate how nanotechnology companies can obtain nanotoxicology data on their materials, implement appropriate safety measures during the R&D process and provide responsible risk management for their clients and customers.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Steffi FriedrichsDr. Steffi Friedrichs is a nanotechnology consultant at The Technology Partnership plc., in Melbourn near Cambridge, where she is responsible for the development of nanotechnological innovations and contributes to the tendering and due diligence processes for the MNT Network (Department of Trade and Industry, UK Government). Steffi is a member of the Board of Directors of the Chicago Microtechnology & Nanotechnology Community and a member of the advisory board of the Institute of Nanotechnology. Her research efforts have expanded into the investigation of the biomimetic assembly of nanostructures and the development of ultra-light, long-lasting heterogeneous catalysts based on novel nanostructured supports. She has recently been appointed Chair of the UK Committee for the Recognition of Nanoscience and Technology Educational Programmes (Institute of Nanotechnology).
