Apple, Inc. confirmed that it has acquired Israeli semiconductor company Anobit technologies, providing it with significant technological boost in the mobile devices market. Apple uses flash memories in most of its products, including from cameras and music players to iPads, iPhones, iPods and MacBook Airs.

Pituach, Israel-based Anobit is a fabless semiconductor company which is the developer of a data signal processing (DSP) technology which enhances flash memories to provide storage solutions. It also provides flash storage solutions for enterprise and mobile markets, based on its proprietary Memory Signal Processing technology.

Flash memory is used in most of the small and mobile devices instead of the bigger hard disk drives. It allows the devices to be thin, and requires less power. Samsung and Intel are said to be the market leaders in NAND flash memory production, and Apple was dependent on them until now. Apple's first acquisition in Israel will allow it to choose the cheapest possible NAND flash chip inventory available for its products in order to maintain market be competitiveness.
